A Seattle Experience: Paddle Board Yoga with SUP Yoga Seattle


Yoga is one of my favorite activities; it’s relaxing, mindful and gets me back to my center.  And paddleboarding is perfect for the active person, by using a surfboard lookalike and paddling with paddles, you can take a motor-free adventure in just about any body of water. What you might not expect, is that these two activities done together are a perfect match.


For this instalment of A Seattle Experience we participated in Paddleboard Yoga with SUP Yoga Seattle!


First impressions: It looks pretty difficult. I'm gonna fall... a lot. I won't be able to do any of the yoga moves.


I was wrong.

I set out, with a few YPOSeattle community members: Frank Macri, Sarah Fauquet, Ben Warren, to meet our yogi paddleboard extraordinaire at Sup Yoga Seattle, Jill Jaques.  Jill briefed us on how to paddle, hold our paddles and what we were to expect once we were on the water. 


We were then handed our own paddleboards, life jacket, paddles and anchor (the anchor being one of the most important parts) and off we went into a lake packed with swimmers and kayaks. 


We paddled out towards calmer waters - not more than a 10 minute paddle from the dock (thanks to tailwinds) - quickly got comfortable and set our anchors down, forming a circle around the instructor, Jill. 


Jill checked each one of our boards and we were ready to get started.

From there we got to practice our yoga moves, either on our knees (a beginner pose for people new to paddleboard yoga), or fully standing.  We allowed our arms to stretch to the sky or kept them steady on the board, whatever felt more natural and stable.  


We all agreed it was a little easier than we had anticipated - even the more challenging moves. 


I will add a quick note, in our group there were 3 other people, one of those people (whom we did not know) did fall off of her board.  No worries there, she gained ‘badass’ points from the group when she quickly jumped back on the board, had a quick laugh and continued to participate.
